Description

To introduce newcomer youth (ages 13 to 24 years) to Canadian culture through activities and programming, while facilitating their settlement into the Hamilton community.  The YMCA has 2 youth centres in Hamilton: 79 James Street South (downtown core) and at 211 Centennial Parkway North (Stoney Creek).

Responsibilities:

  • Provide assistance and supervision in the Newcomer Youth Centre
  • Provide an introduction and understanding of Canadian culture and the Hamilton community
  • Interact with youth and respond to their needs within reason
  • Work closely with YMCA staff members
  • Adhere to the YMCA mission, values and procedures
  • Maintain confidentiality of the YMCA and client information
  • Maintain an environment that is free of bias/favoritism

Boundaries and Limitations:

  • Refrain from disciplinary action towards youth, instead consult with Youth Settlement Workers
  • Refrain from giving advice about settlement/legal issues to participants, instead refer them to Youth Settlement Workers

Dates and Times

Commitment:
• Consistent commitment of 2 to 4 hours per week
