Description

Mathstronauts is proud to launch our third “hackathon” called “STEM Hacks” – a fun one-day event for youth in grades 5 to 8 are challenged to solve STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) related problems in teams. Through this event, our team hopes to capture an early interest in STEM and inspire youth through innovation and creativity. We are looking for McMaster University students who are interested in being a Mentor for the event!

This event is an excellent opportunity for university students who are interested in being part of a top-quality event that engages nearly 200 middle school students from all over Southern Ontario. If you love teaching and working with children, have great teamwork and leadership skills, and are passionate about STEM, this is an amazing opportunity for you!

Mentors will be paired with a group of 4-5 middle school students for the day and tasks include:

  • Guiding student learning and discovery through the challenge they are given.
Helping students develop a strategy to solve the challenge and assisting them in solving it.
  • Interacting with the students (make sure they’re having fun as well as learning at the same time!)
  • Making sure the students are staying on task during the challenge.

TWO TYPES OF MENTORS:

  1. Technical Mentor: must have some skill in coding with Arduino (C++). An engineering background is recommended, but not necessary. Workshops to build skills will be provided.
  2. Non-Technical Mentor: must have some background in science and general problem solving skills required (no coding required).
